JOHN McCAIN PRIZE FOR LEADERSHIP IN PUBLIC SERVICE PRESENTED TO THE PEOPLE OF HONG KONG
November 23, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Halifax, NS – Halifax International Security Forum Board Member Cindy McCain presented the John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service today to the people of Hong Kong in recognition of their struggle to preserve their rights and to press for democratic reform.

The prize was presented at the eleventh annual Halifax International Security Forum – an event that Senator McCain long supported and promoted.

“My husband once said that nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself,” said Mrs. McCain. “I hope this tribute to those who are struggling for their rights in Hong Kong will encourage more people around the world to raise their voices in support of freedom and justice, for this and future generations in Hong Kong.  They are fighting for something larger than themselves.”

Accepting the award on behalf of the people of Hong Kong were Emily Lau, former chairperson of the Democratic Party of Hong, and Figo Chan, Vice-convener of the Civil Human Rights Front in Hong Kong.

“The courage and commitment of the people of Hong Kong are powerful reminders of why our work this weekend in Halifax is so important,” said Forum President Peter Van Praagh. “Like John McCain, the protesters are living the values that Halifax International Security Forum was created to promote. They are very worthy recipients of this year’s prize and I hope they feel the support that comes with it.”

The Halifax International Security Forum is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan organization based in Washington, DC.  The Forum is made possible by the generous support from its partners, including the Government of Canada, and the Halifax Canada Club.
