Halifax International Security Forum 2017 Announces: “Halifax Peace with Women Fellowship”
November 18, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
18 November 2017

Halifax, Nova Scotia —  Halifax International Security Forum is proud to present an exciting new initiative designed to enhance the role of women in international security.

Jonathan Weisstub, Chairman of the Board of the Halifax International Security Forum, today announced the Halifax Peace with Women Fellowship.

This 3-week program will initially be offered to between 6 and 10 women from allied militaries. It will give them the opportunity to visit Ottawa, Waterloo, Silicon Valley, and Washington, DC with the aim of studying how Canada and the United States approach strategic challenges.

“It would include meetings and seminars that focus on the intersection between new technologies and global security, bringing more women to the cutting edge of some of the most important issues in defense and security,” said Weisstub.

“I am passionate about this issue,” said Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff General Jonathan Vance from the panel he was speaking on. “I am surrounded by great women in this room, and if this fellowship can help more women achieve leadership roles, this is a great thing.”

The Forum plans to issue a call for applications by January 15, 2018 – with a closing deadline of April 30th. The program would begin on October 25th and end with the fellows participating in, and being recognized at, the 2018 Halifax International Security Forum – which will be the 10th anniversary of the Forum’s inception.

Mindful of how much work remains to be done so more women will be included at all levels of strategic thinking and practice, the Fellowship may expand in future years to more diverse parts of the world where access to such opportunities is less available.
